Short History of Franklin Knolls

Franklin Knolls is a neighborhood in Silver Spring, Maryland. The census-designated place (CDP) is bounded to the north by the Capital Beltway, to the west by University Blvd., to the east by the Northwest Branch of the Anacostia River, and to the south by the neighborhood of Montgomery Knolls. Nearby communities include Four Corners, Woodmoor, Clifton Park Village, Langley Park and New Hampshire Estates.

The history of Franklin Knolls started from the early to mid-1800s  when the land was a rural, agricultural area. In the 1950s and early 1960s, Franklin Knolls was established as a residential development by the Cafritz Construction Company. Headed by Morris Cafritz – an influential developer who used racial restrict covenants before the passage of the 1968 Fair Housing Act to exclude African Americans and other racial minorities from living in all-white suburban communities – the neighborhood of Franklin Knolls was entirely white. It consists of mostly Jewish and Catholic residents because of its close proximity to the Conservative synagogue Temple Israel and the Roman Catholic school and church Saint Bernadette. However, over time, the neighborhood has grown to become more ethnically and racially diverse with a mix of whites, African Americans, Asians, Latinos, and more. In 2003, the Franklin Knolls Civic Association's newsletter was even translated into Spanish and Vietnamese to help residents in the area who don't understand English.
