History of Glen Burnie

Located in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, Glen Burnie is a census-designated place in suburban Baltimore. In 1812, it was established as "Glennsburne" by Elias Glenn – a district attorney. Throughout the years, the name of Glenn Burnie has been changed multiple times. There was "Glennsbourne Farm," "Glenburnie," "Tracey's Station," and "Myrtle." It wasn't until 1930 that postmaster Louis J. DeAlba gave the town its final name of Glen Burnie.

First Avenue School

The First Avenue School was one of the first schools built in Glen Burnie. This historic school building was designed and built by architect Edward Woodfall. The school consists of two parts. The first section, built in 1899 when the school was established, is a hip-roofed building with only two rooms. The second section is a large two-story brick gable-roofed Classical Revival-style building. It was built in 1917 and served as the main part of the school. Since then, the building has been used as a church, beauty school, and condominiums. In 2007, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Harundale Mall

Harundale Mall was the first enclosed, air-conditioned mall located on the east side of the Mississippi River. It was built in 1958 and closed in 1997. The mall was redeveloped and is now the Harundale Plaza. The plaza is now home to the following stores:

Besides the Harundale Mall, Glen Burnie also has three other shopping center that provides shopping and dining to the guests and residents of Glen Burnie, Maryland. The Glen Burnie Plaza Shopping Center, Glen Burnie Village Shopping, and Marley Station Mall are all located on Ritchie Hwy. in Glen Burnie. The Marley Station Mall has a movie theater and over 120 stores. Also situated along Ritchie Hwy. are local dining spots like Seaside, Sake Japanese Steak House, Honey Bee Diner, Jakum Sung, Mi Pueblo, and Gino's.

Another attraction of Glen Burnie is their outdoor ice skating rink. Glen Burnie Outdoor Ice Skating is located on the corner of Baltimore Annapolis Blvd. and Crain Hwy. S. Tickets for skaters can be purchased for the low price of $11.

Transportation

The two roads that serve as major roadways for residents in Glen Burnie are the Maryland Route 2 part of the Governor Ritchie Highway and the Maryland Route 3 part of the Robert Crain Highway. The Crain Highway was built in 1927. The Ritchie Highway followed soon after in 1939. It was a major highway that carried most of the traffic in the Baltimore area until Interstate 97 opened in the 1980s. Now, I-97 connects Glen Burnie to Baltimore and Annapolis.

For people that don't have cars in the Glen Burnie neighborhood, the Baltimore Light Rail is an accessible form of transportation for commuters. There are two light rail stops in Glen Burnie. One at Ferndale Station and one at Cromwell/Glen Burnie station. There are connections to the MTA Route 14 and Baltimore & Annapolis Trail at the Cromwell/Glen Burnie station.
