Woodside is a neighborhood in Montgomery County, Maryland. It was founded in 1889 and is the oldest neighborhood in the area of Silver Spring. The community is bounded by Georgia Ave. to the east, Spring St. to the south, 16th St. to the north, and the Washington Metro Red Line to the west. Surrounding neighborhoods include North Portal Estates, Downtown Silver Spring, Woodside Forest and Woodside Park.
The residential properties in the Woodside neighborhood are valued from $400,000 to $1.3 million. It is served by the Montgomery County Public Schools District. Families with children living in the area are zoned for Woodlin Elementary School, Sligo Middle School and Albert Einstein High School.
Besides using private vehicles to navigate the roads of Woodside, there is also public transportation available for residents and visitors to utilize. The Washington Metro Red Line service is located at the nearby Silver Spring and Forest Glen Stations. In 2022, the Woodside station on the Purple Line is scheduled to be open on 16th St. The neighborhood is also served by the Metrobus numbers Y2, Y8, Q2, and Q4.
The Silver Spring United Methodist Church was previously known as the Sligo Village Methodist Church and the Woodside United Methodist Church. It was first built in 1872 on Georgia Ave. near Colesville Rd. However, the location raised concerns about safety hazards because of its close proximity to the Washington Woodside and Forest Glen Railway. In 1897, the new subdivision of Woodside donated a plot of land to the church. So, the church was placed on rollers and pulled to its current location on Georgia Ave. by horses.
Today the Silver Spring United Methodist Church has two campuses. The one on Georgia Ave. is the downtown campus, which houses the church's worship center and offices. The other campus is the Four Corners Campus. Located on University Blvd. E. it houses the church's mission center. The Silver Spring United Methodist Church downtown campus is open from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. It closes on Wednesdays and Saturdays. On Sundays, the church is open from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.
The Woodside Urban Park is situated on the corner of Georgia Ave. and Spring St. It was acquired by the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission in 1973. It features a large children's playground, tennis courts, handball courts, a 3,500-square foot skate park, picnic tables, a bronze statue of a man riding a unicycle, and a water fountain.
Also located at Woodside Urban Park is a full-size gymnasium. The gymnasium is open from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. It can be rented out for $40 per hour for residents and $48 for non-residents. A security deposit of $150 must be made during the reservation.
