Brief History of Cherry Hill

Cherry Hill is one of the neighborhoods in the southernmost part of Baltimore, Maryland. It is bounded by the Patapsco River's Middle Branch to the north, the river's main channel to the east, the census-designated place (CDP) of Baltimore Highlands to the south, and the Baltimore-Washington Pkwy. to the west.

The neighborhood of Cherry Hill was developed fairly recently in the mid-1900s as homes for African American veterans returning from World War II and the Korean War. However, the area had been settled in beforehand by the Roma of Romanian descent. In the early to mid-1900s, these people set up encampments in Cherry Hill because it was on the outskirts of the city and undeveloped. They traveled up and down the East Coast doing fortune-telling and carnivals.

MedStar Harbor Hospital

MedStar Harbor Hospital was originally named South Baltimore Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital. Opened in 1903 by physician Harry Peterman, the hospital was located on Light St., in what was once Baltimore City's industrial area. Between 1967 and 1968, construction for the current MedStar Harbor Hospital was conducted on S. Hanover St. in Broening Park, at the former site of the Maryland Yacht Club. The hospital was renamed Harbor Hospital for its proximity to the Inner Harbor. In 1996, it became part of the regional health care network Helix Health. In 1998, Helix Health merged with Medlantic Healthcare Group and was renamed MedStar Health in 1999.

Berger Cookies of Debaufre Bakeries

The recipe of Berger Cookies – a cultural icon of Baltimore - was brought to the U.S. in 1835 by German immigrants George and Henry Berger. The Bergers created a bakery and sold the cookies until the mid-1900s. Through many changes in ownership, Charles Debaufre Jr. became the sole proprietor of the bakery and cookie recipe in 1994. The small factory of Debaufree Bakeries now handmakes these cookies in Cherry Hill. Well known for its thick layer of chocolate frosting on top of a shortbread cookie, the recipe has won many awards throughout the Baltimore area, including the "Best Cookie" award and the "Best of Baltimore Award" in 2011.
