Boring is an unincorporated community in the county of Baltimore, Maryland. Originally named Fairview, it was renamed Boring after its first postmaster David Boring sometime in the late 19th century. The community is located approximately five miles north of Reisterstown, at the intersection of Old Hanover Rd. and Pleasant Grove Rd. It is home to around 40 residential properties, the Boring Volunteer Fire Company, the Boring Methodist Church and the Boring Post Office.
The Boring Post Office is situated on Old Hanover Rd., just south of the intersection. The property once housed the old country store that served the community. However, on August 9, 1880, a post office opened at the former store. Serving the 21020 ZIP Code, the steps in the front of the post office has become a popular photography location for visitors because of the sign that bears the community's name.
The Boring Gas Engine Show and Flea Market is held annually in June by the Boring Volunteer Fire Department. Exhibits including old tractors, steam engines and gas engines that were used in the early 1900s to serve Maryland's farming communities are featured during the show. Also displayed at the show are antique tractor pulls, modern garden tractor pulls and two antique vehicles. The two antique vehicles are a 1909 horse-drawn wagon and a 19367 Doge Boyer engine belonging to the fire department.
The Downey Family Farm is a family-run farm in Boring. The farmhouse was built in 1891 by the Osborn family, who lived in the area during that time. The property was later sold to James Peltzer, Jr., and then the Downey Family. Renovations on the farmhouse were started immediately after the Downeys acquired the land to bring it up to date with modern standard living. A more modern kitchen, laundry room, bigger downstairs bathroom, slipt air A/C system, modern septic system, upgraded water well and large grid of solar panels were added to the Farmhouse. In 2020, renovations to the guesthouse on the property were also completed. Plans are in the works for the barn to turn it into a rentable venue for events like weddings, birthdays, reunions and more.
Although Downey Family Farm may be a production farm, some animals have been permanent residents of the property for quite some time now. These animals are the foundation and breeding stock for the farm. Notable animals include Kiko the goat, Aphrodite the goat, and Alisha the pig. Meats are sold by the whole, half or quarter. Customers also have the option to purchase in pounds.
