Davidsonville is an unincorporated community in the central area of Anne Arundel County, Maryland. Composed of mostly farms and suburban-like developments, the semi-rural community has no high-density housing and little commercial development. Most homes employ well-and-septic systems because they're not served by public water, sewer or natural gas utilities. As of the 2010 census, there is a population of 7,815 people living in the area. Households have a median income of $141,011.
Back before European colonists settled in the area, it was once home to Algonquian-speaking Native American tribes. In the 1600s and 1700s, Europeans began settling and developing farms and plantations in what is now known as Davidsonville. Several examples of 18th-century development remain in the area today.
Under the Fifth Lord Baltimore, the Lord Proprietor Charles Calvert, and his governs, the Maryland Colonial Assembly passed the Free School Act on October 26, 1723. It mandated the construction of public schools in the 12 Maryland counties of that time. The law was one of the first laws in colonial America to provide free, publicly supported primary education. The Free School of Anne Arundel County was built sometime between 1724 and 1746. The original structure still stands today off Rutland Rd. On June 16, 1983, the school was added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). It is now owned by the local board of education and operates as a museum that's open to the public and school groups for tours.
In the late 1700s, Major William Brogden, an American Revolution solder, built the Roedown plantation. It was once the home of the annual steeplechase event Marlborough Hunt Races. Located off Harwood Rd., it is said that George Washington stayed at the house in 1760.
The Middle Plantation is the most prominent example of the 1700s settlement in Davidsonville. The property dates back to the 1664 land grant by the 2nd Baron Baltimore, Cecil Calvert, to Mareen Duvall, a prominent French immigrant. The current house is situated on Davidsonville Rd.
The development of Davidsonville as a crossroads community didn't begin until the mid-1800s. From whose family the area got its name, Thomas Davidson built a house at the corner of Davidsonville Rd. and Central Ave. in 1839. In 1992, the Davidsonville Historic District was listed on the NRHP. The Maryland Historic Trust describes the historic district as one of the best-preserved examples of crossroads communities remaining in the county.
Mount Airy is another historic home in Davidsonville. It was built in 1857 as a two-story, cube-shaped brick Georgian-Federal style, late neo-classical architecture dwelling for James Alexis Iglehart. The home features a Doric portico on a central hall plan. Also located on the property is the family schoolhouse and mid-1800s frame smokehouse. Mount Airy can be found on Mount Airy Rd., just off of Maryland Route 424.
Davidsonville is home to one public school. Part of the Anne Arundel County Public Schools System, Davidsonville Elementary School is located on Central Ave. W. Serving students from grades Kindergarten through fifth, it has an enrollment of 656 students. There is a student-to-teacher ratio of 18 to 1. Based on test scores of by the state, 76% of its students are at least proficient in reading and 61% are in math. Davidsonville Elementary has an overall Niche grade of a B plus and is ranked 15 in the best public elementary schools in Anne Arundel County.
