Crofton is a planned community in the county of Anne Arundel, Maryland. Located at 39.915 degrees north latitude and 76.412 degrees west longitude, Crofton is 9.8 miles west of Annapolis, the state capital of Maryland. This census-designated place (CDP) was established in 1964. Named after a small town in Cumberland County, England, Crofton was created by the Crawford Corporation. The present-day Crofton Country Club anchored the community. Katcef Archeological Site is located near Crofton, Maryland. It is the home of base campsites dating from the Paleo-Indian Clovis period to the late Woodland period. The site was added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1991.
Also another NRHP, Linthicum is a historic home and farm complex located in Crofton. The site features a frame pre-1815 tobacco barn, 19th-century frame dwelling, a mid-1800s meathouse and cemetery. The tobacco house is one of the only pre-1815 tobacco left in the county. In 2016, the arboretum in Linthicum Walks was recognized as an ArbNet Level 1 Arboretum. Some of the species living there are the Blue Atlas cedar, Japanese cedar, Chinese elm, dogwood, magnolia, maple and holly.
Situated on Johns Hopkins Rd., Whites Hall is the birthplace and home of Johns Hopkins. The house was constructed in the 1780s. It was added to the Maryland Historic Site inventory in 1969. In 2017, The Johns Hopkins House, Inc., a Maryland nonprofit organization, was founded to save and restore Whites Hall. In hopes of opening the property to the pubic, the organization plan to turn the house into a country inn and restaurant. They also are planning on adding an 18th-century style barn, arboretum, community park and bird sanctuary to the property. The barn would be used as a cafe, bakery and wedding reception area. There will also be colonial cottages moved onto the property for overnight stay areas. In order to honor the enslaved people who worked at the Whites Hall plantation, The organization will be creating a museum showcasing the lives and struggles of these people. A scholarship program giving out annual academic scholarships will also be established in honor of these former slaves.
