Development of Canton

The word Canton came from the English pronunciation of Guangzhou. John O'Donnell named his plantation this after his experience of trading with merchants in the Chinese port of Guangzhou when he settled in Baltimore in 1785. In the late 1700s, after O'Donnell's land was sold off, the Canton Company developed it for the waterfront industry. In the 1800s, Welsh, Irish, German, Polish, and Ukrainian immigrants migrated to the area. Welsh and Irish workers made up the majority of the working class there. By the late 1990s, the neighborhood had undergone major gentrification. From 2000 to 2016, it was ranked the 16th most-gentrified zip code.

The Canton Anti-Racism Alliance

Made up of 50 community members, business owners, city residents, and African-American historians, the Canton Anti-Racism Alliance was created to address the slavery that happened in Canton. In their quest to build a better and more inclusive community, they petitioned to remove the statue of slave owner Capt. John O'Donnell. With the help of the Canton Community Association, their petition was approved. On April 5th, 2021, the O'Donnell statute was removed from Canton Square.

Landmark and Attractions

Added to the list of National Register of Historic Places in 1980, Canton Historic Districts has many landmarks and attractions that are frequent hotspots for locals and visitors to the area. The O'Donnell Square, or Canton Square, is Canton's traditional center. There are bars, restaurants, salons, gift shops, and a park located here. In the 2000s, the Canton Waterfront Park, the Maryland Korean War Memorial, the rehabilitated American Can Company building, the Du Burns Soccer Arena, and the Canton Dog Park were added to the neighborhood. Another popular attraction is Patterson Park. If you're interested in arts, learn more about the Highlandtown arts district.

Patterson Park

Sitting adjacent to Canton, Maryland is Patterson Park. The park was the site of the battle of North Point at "Hampstead Hill." This battle was a decisive moment during the War of 1812. It wasn't until 1827, by the donation of William Patterson, did this land become a park. The six acres of land given by Patterson was the first gift of land given to a city for the purpose of creating a public recreation space. It is also the oldest park in Baltimore.

Today, the park has extended to 55 acres. Patterson Park is a fine representation of a 19th-century park design. The park features the Dominic "Mimi" DiPietro Ice Rick, Virginia Baker Recreation Center, Patterson Park Audubon Center, Patterson Park Swimming Pool, Patterson Park Boat Lake, Patterson Park City Farms Garden, and the City Commission on Aging. Amenities also included in the park are two playgrounds, five basketball courts, 10 tennis courts, nine ballfields, nine athletic fields, and two picnic pavilions.

Festivities

Canton is home to many events like Baltimore's annual Ukrainian-American festival, Light Night Canton, food and wine festivals, and summer concerts. During the summer months, visitors also head to Canton to view the Baltimore Harbor July 4th fireworks.
