Lakeland is a neighborhood in Baltimore, Maryland. It is bounded by a CSX/MARC Railroad line to the west and north, Annapolis Rd. to the east, and the Baltimore city/county line to the south. Communities surrounding the area include West Baltimore, Mt. Winans, Lansdowne and Cherry Hill.
The areas of Lakeland, Westport and Mount Winans were established as early as 1675. Settlers moved into the communities and set up their small farms. Later on, the Lakeland community would be developed with two-story brick homes to house the workers and families of the nearby Baltimore Iron Works Company in Westport. This community was named Minersville until it changed to Lakeland.
Lakeland Elementary Middle School is part of the Baltimore City Public Schools District. Located on Stranden Rd., the school sits adjacent to Lakeland Recreation Center. It has a population of 909 students from grades pre-Kindergarten through eighth. There is a student-to-teacher of 17 to 1. Based on state test scores, 43% of its students are proficient in reading and 30% are in math. The school has a GreatSchools rating of 6 out of 10 and an overall Niche grade of a C.
The Lakeland Recreation Center is home to the "OLD MITEY-MITES and VIKINGS" football teams. Catering to the community of Lakeland, it is open Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. On Tuesdays, it is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The center is one of the many meal sites in Baltimore City. From 4 to 6 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays, snacks and supper meals are available for youth and families in the area.
Also providing a recreation space for residents in Lakeland is Lakeland Park. Situated on Wegworth Ln., the park is owned by the Baltimore City Department Recreation and Parks. It is open from sunrise to sunset and offers recreational amenities such as open space, a baseball field, a football and soccer field and an outdoor basketball court. Pets are allowed to accompany you if they are on a leash.
Hollinswood Shopping Center is bordered by W. Patapsco Ave., Baltimore-Washington Pkwy., and Hollins Ferry Rd. It serves the areas of Lakeland, Cherry Hill and Lansdowne. Shopping and dining options provided at the center are Coinstar, Las Esperanzas Cafe, LA Mart, T-Mobile, Nails One, Planet Fitness, Gold Brokers Pawn Shop, Little Caesars Pizza, Healthy Dental, LibertyX Bitcoin ATM, Bargain Cigarettes, Advance Auto Parts, Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen and Sonic Drive-In.
