The History of Bowie

Bowie is a city in the county of Prince George's, Maryland. Started from a small rail town, Bowie, Maryland, was ranked at number 28 on the 2014 CNN Money's Best Places to Live (in the U.S.) list. The existence of Bowie all started back in 1853 when Colonel William Duckett Bowie got a charter to create a rail line into Southern Maryland. However, its establishment didn't happen until 1870, when land speculator and developer Ben Plumb started selling building lots around the railroad junction. He named this settlement Huntington City. In 1880, the settlement of Huntington City was rechartered as Bowie. It was named after Colonel Bowie's son Oden Bowie. The town of Bowie was incorporated in 1916. By the 21st century, the town of Bowie has grown into a city with an area of 16 square miles. The history of the small rail town is on display at the Bowie Railroad Museum, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.

Belair Estate

The original Belair Estate is home to the Belair Mansion and Belair Stable. Built in 1745, the Belair Mansion is the five-part plantation home of Govern Samual Ogle and his son Governor Benjamin Ogle. The mansion was later listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Also located in the estate was the Belair Stable. Operated by William Woodward, Sr. and his son Billy Woodward after they purchased the estate, Belair Stable was part of the Belair Stud – one of the famous racing stables around the mid-1900s. These horses would go to the nearby Bowie Race Track to compete. Belair is the only great colonial estate where breeding thoroughbred racehorses happened over three centuries.

In 1957, the firm of Levitt and Sons purchased the estate and developed it into a residential community. Called the Belair at Bowie, most of the residents of the City of Bowie now live in this planned community. The Belair Mansion and Belair Stable were turned into a museum operated by the City of Bowie.

Sacred Heart Church

Established in 1729 in Bowie, MD, the Sacred Heart Church is a Catholic Church. Originally called "White Marsh," the church was created secretly by James Carroll when the Catholic Church was still prohibited from worshipping in public. The old chapel of White Marsh is the only Catholic church in Prince George's County that was built before the American Revolution. When Catholics were allowed to worship freely after the American Revolution, John Carroll was appointed by the Pope as the first Roman Catholic bishop in the United States on May 18, 1789. He later became the first archbishop in America.

Centennial Park

Also known as the Town Center Park, the Centennial Park was opened in 2016 to commemorate 100 years of the City of Bowie's incorporation. The park is located on Mitchellville Rd. next to the Bowie City Hall, directly behind the Bowie Town Center. This small park features an inaccessible island, two water fountains, two overlooks, a walkable wooden bridge, picnic tables and benches, World-Trail exercise areas, and a scenic lake called the Mill Branch Pond. The Centennial Park is also home to the Great Blue Heron and certified as a Monarch Waystation.
