Short History of Garrett Park

Garrett Park is a town in the county of Montgomery, Maryland. Its history dates back to 1886 when businessman Henry W. Copp purchased the land to build a suburban development representing an English village. He named the streets after locations talked about in novels written by the English author Walter Scott. Working with the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, Copp was able to give builders reduced rates to transport materials and workers into the town. New residents of the community were also given free trips to move in. Commercial development in the area was limited. By the time of its incorporation in 1898, the town had only 30 buildings and about 100 residents.

Garrett Park, named after the former president of B&O Railroad John Work Garrett, lies along the former B&O railway corridor. Today, it has a 4-star restaurant, post office and farmer's market. Part of the town is included in the Garrett Park Historic District, which was listed in 1975 on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). One of the buildings in the district was the first school serving the residents of Garrett Park. It was designed by local architect Howard Wright Cutler in 1928 and is now preserved as part of a residential home. The Maryland Historical Trust has designated it as a historic site. Garrett Park was also declared an arboretum in 1977. A tree inventory of all the trees in the town and a tree planting schedule is still maintained. In May 1982, Garrett Park became the first nuclear-weapons free-zone in the U.S., after the town banned the production, transportation, processing, storage, disposal and use of it.
