Early History

Over 250 years ago, settlers from Europe were given land grants that created what is known today as Rockville, Maryland. By the 1750s, local merchants in Georgetown began transporting tobacco to the market down a path once used by Indians. In 1776, the small community was declared to be the seat of the new Montgomery County.

Identified as Rockville in 1803, the life of the town centered around the events of the Courthouse. More residences and businesses were established, and the town of nearly 600 was formed in 1860. Over a decade later, the rail service opened, creating tons of mobility and extensive opportunities for the growing city.

Resident's in Washington made their way over to Rockville, where they built permanent homes and cottages while investors took advantage of the booming period and purchased tons of land. In the early 20th century, the city's growth slowed down, and the population grew by only an additional 45 bodies from 1900 to 1920. Though the population barely rose, the city's technology continued to expand with the use of electricity, telephones, trolleys, parks, indoor bathrooms, and much more.

Rockville currently has a population of more than 60,000 people and is continuing to develop. The variables that established Rockville in the 18th and 19th centuries are now the same ones that draw new people: the involvement of the county government, a desirable location near the capital of the country, interconnected transport routes that can move between cities, and the reputation as an independent town with tons of historical relevance to offer.
