Norbeck is an area in Montgomery County, Maryland. Located around the intersection of Norbeck Rd. and Georgia Ave., it is northwest of the area of Layhill, south of Olney and north of Aspen Hill. The area was founded by free blacks shortly before the American Civil War. However, the community was slow in its development. It wasn't until the 1800s when a store and post office opened. A smith shop followed a decade later. By 1900, Norbeck's commercial course was set as A.E. Stonestreet and Walter H. White operated their large store, postal service and blacksmith shop, respectively. Today the area is part of the Montgomery Public Schools System. The schools zoned for students living in Norbeck are Flower Valley Elementary School, Earle B. Wood Middle School and Rockville High School.
Leisure World Plaza is a shopping mall that is part of the Leisure World of Maryland gated community for adults age 55 and over. It is situated just outside the gated community on Georgia Ave., between International Dr. and Rossmoor Blvd. The shopping mall offers a variety of stores, businesses and restaurants for the residents and visitors to Norbeck and its surrounding areas. Some of which include:
Once visitors and residents are done shopping at Leisure World Plaza, they can enjoy the many parks Norbeck has to offer. Norbeck-Muncaster Mill Neighborhood Park is open from sunrise to sunset on Muncaster Mill Rd. It was acquired by the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) in 1965. The 5.5-acre park provides a basketball court, playground, open field and air-conditioned building with kitchen. The Park Activity Building is available daily year-round on a first-come, first-served basis. Reservations can be made six months in advance by calling the Permit Office during their business hours.
Located just north of the Norbeck area is the Norbeck Country Club. The centerpiece of the Rockville community, the country club was founded in 1954 and is now part of the ClubCorp family. Sitting on 198 acres of beautiful greenery off of Georgia Ave., it was designed by Alred H. Tull as one of the most beautiful and challenging courses in the D.C. metropolitan area. Amenities included at the country club for its members are a championship golf course, Olympic-sized pool, world-class tennis, state-of-the-art fitness facilities, and indoor and outdoor dining options.
Another spacious recreation area of Norbeck is the Olney Manor Recreational Park on Georgia Ave. The 61-acre park was acquired by the M-NCPPC in increments between 1968 and 1970. It features various athletic fields, a lighted baseball field, basketball courts, handball courts, lighted tennis courts, a volleyball court, a playground, a skate park, a dog park, and an indoor swim center.
Like the whole park, the 1-acre mulch base dog park is also open at sunrise. However, it closes after sunset, at 11 p.m. like the lighted courts. The completely fenced park provides opportunities for off-leash exercise and play for both large and small dogs in two separate play areas.
As for the Olney Manor Skate Park, it is a 90-foot by 160-foot park that features 14,400 square feet of skateboarding fun. The park offers a 10-foot-deep bool, steps with handrail, Hubba ledge, Fun Box with flat rail, quarter pipes, manual pad, and pyramid Ledge.
