Derwood is an unincorporated area in east-central Montgomery County, Maryland. The census-designated place (CDP) lies north of Rockville, northwest of the greater Silver Spring area, southwest of Olney and southeast of Gaithersburg. It was originally named "Deer Park" and then "Deer Wood" before becoming Derwood. The area includes the following neighborhoods:
Derwood was first recognized as a train stop on the B&O Railroad in the 1880s. From 1886 through 1889, a larger railroad station was built in the area. A small community began developing around the station in the early 1900s. However, on January 7, 1954, the Derwood railroad station and Schwartz Mill caught on fire and were destroyed. The station was never rebuilt. In 1965, the 75-acre man-made Lake Needwood reservoir was created by impounding Rock Creek with the Lake Needwood Dam. In 1974, the Derwood post office was relocated to the Redland Shopping Center. Keeping the name "Derwood Branch," it designated the 20855 zip code area as Derwood. This increased the size of Derwood greatly. In 1984, the establishment of the Shady Grove Metro station increased the community's population. Derwood currently houses the headquarters of Goodwill Industries International Inc.
King Farm Park is a 12-acre park in Derwood. Owned and operated by the City of Rockville, it is located on Watkins Pond Blvd. The park features art in public places, baseball and softball field, basketball court, drinking fountains, grills, park benches, a park shelter, walking paths, picnic tables, playground, soccer and multipurpose field, and two lighted tennis courts with 10 and under blended lines.
The King Farm Stream Valley Park is situated near King Farm Park, between W. Gude Dr. and Watkins Overlook. The park is 28.4 acres and offers open recreational space, park shelter, unpaved trails and a forested stream valley.
The King Farm Village Center is a shopping mall catering to the residents of Derwood. It is located on Redland Blvd., northwest of King Farm Park. Some of the stores and restaurants featured at the mall are CPR Cell Phone Repair Rockville, Starbucks, Safeway, Kicks Karate - Rockville, Nagoya Sushi, Botanero Restaurant, Fontina Grille, Coffee Republic, Baja Fresh Mexican Grill, Hair Cuttery and Ryden Optik.
The Crabbs Branch Stream Valley Park is owned and operated by Montgomery Parks and open from dawn to dusk. The park is located on the east side of Derwood, at the intersection of Crabbs Branch Way and Redland Rd. Extending southeast to Rock Creek Regional Park, the 138-acre park is undeveloped for recreational activity. However, it provides a place for quiet enjoyment of nature.
