Established in 1960 by Robert W. Barros, Mater Dei School can be found on Seven Locks Rd., in Ashleigh. It is an all-boys private Catholic school modeled after the Saint David's School in New York City. Previously located on Churchhill Rd. in Silver Spring, Maryland, the campus was moved to its current location in 1964. Serving 1st to 8h grade, the school has a total enrollment of 228 students.
There is a student-to-teacher ratio of 12 to 1. Students can only participate in team sports once they reach 5th grade. Tuition for Mater Dei School range from $18,600 to $20,250.
Open Mondays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., the Seven Locks Swim & Tennis Club caters to residents of Ashleigh and its surrounding neighborhoods. Limited to 350 memberships, this private, member-owned club features amenities like a zero-grade entry, kids' playground, shaded kiddie pool, water slide, basketball court, ping pong table, covered pavilion area and snack bar.
The club also provides swim lessons, dive lessons, tennis lessons, day camps, tennis socials, private parties, family BBQs and club-wide school events such as School's Out Party and Movie Nights and S'Mores Nights. Annual memberships are $830 for families, $685 for couples and $535 for singles. There is a $75 senior discount available for couples and singles 65-years-old and over. The Seven Locks Swim & Tennis Club is also the host for the Seven Locks Swim and Dive Team.
The Bethesda Country Club is a championship golf course established in 1947. Initially a 9-holer, it was expanded to 18 holes in 1949. In 1961, Maryland took 13 acres of the country club to build interstate 270 and the Capital Beltway. Because of this, it went through major realignment and improvement. Designed by Eddie Ault, a new clubhouse was built to replace the original farmhouse structure. A new swimming pool, tennis house and several tennis courts were also added.
In 1992, further renovations were done to the country club by Arthur Hills. It resulted in new bunkers, tees, practice areas, cart paths, greens, a new irrigation system and an enlarged lake. Bethesda Country Club currently features amenities including 10 tennis courts, swimming pools, an 18-hole golf course, the Club Grill and Bar, the Family Grill, Folksy's Café, Poolside Cabana, a ballroom, clubhouse and fitness center.
