Coldstream-Homestead-Montebello is a neighborhood in the northeastern part of Baltimore, Maryland. It is surrounded by the communities of Better Waverly, Waverly, Ednor Gardens - Lakeside, Mayfield, Belair - Edison, South Clifton Park, Darley Park, East Baltimore Midway and Harwood. The neighborhood lies just southeast of the former Memorial Stadium and northwest of Clifton Park.
Abbreviated to C-H-M, a part of the neighborhood was added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) on October 23, 2013, as the Coldstream Homestead Montebello Historic District. The district has been recognized for its development of a more suburban style of rowhouses. In 1950, C-H-M was rated the best neighborhood in the city of Baltimore. However, race riots and white flights have caused the area to decline in income and increase in crime.
Baltimore City College is the third oldest public secondary school in the U.S. A magnet academic-specialized selective high school for liberal arts, humanities and social studies, it was founded in 1839 for young men in downtown Baltimore. In 1928, it relocated to the present Collegiate Gothic landmark building in the heart of the C-H-M community. Today, "The Castle on the Hill" sits on a 39-acre campus and features a 200-foot tall Gothic stone tower on one of the highest spots and scenic views in Baltimore. It has since been declared as a National Historic Landmark.
Baltimore City College is the 84th best public high school in Maryland, according to Niche. Serving grades 9 through 12, the co-educational school has a total enrollment of 1,363 students. There is a student-to-teacher ratio of 20 to 1. Based on state test scores, 78% of its students are proficient in reading and 52% in math.
Abbottston Elementary School is a Baltimore City Public School located adjacent to the Baltimore City College. It was named Abbottston in memory of the Abbottston country estate of industrialist Horace Abbott. The school offers classes from pre-Kindergarten through fifth grade. There is a population of 325 students and a student-to-teacher ratio of 13 to 1. Abbottston Elementary has a GreatSchools rating of a 2 out of 10 and a Niche overall grade of a C minus.
Kirk Avenue Athletic Field, or Coldstream Park, is a neighborhood park in the neighborhood of C-H-M. Owned and managed by the Baltimore City Department of Recreation and Parks, it is open from dawn to dusk on Filmore St. The park provides recreational opportunities like open space, an outdoor basketball court and an outdoor pool.
